Yoder started working within the company in the same capacity that many Yoder Lumber employees kick off their career: as a lumber handler. Although he is a member of the family who owns the business, he still climbed his way up through the ranks of the company, learning many things along the way.
“Since 2009, Woodworking Network has identified key individuals that have made an impact at their companies — and on the industry. The inclusion of Mel Yoder to this distinguished list was an obvious choice,” said Karen Koenig, the editor-in-chief of the Woodworking Network.
The various woodworking associations that Yoder is involved in have recognized him throughout his career, and he continues to contribute to those organizations, such as the Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc. and the Ohio Forestry Association Inc.
“Mel Yoder and Yoder Lumber have played a prominent role in Ohio’s hardwood products industry for many years,” said John Dorka, the executive director of the Ohio Forestry Association Inc. “Mel is a promoter of hardwoods and an industry innovator who understands the value of improving technology and competitiveness. Yoder Lumber is a shining example of Ohio wood products manufacturing.”
Tom Inman, the executive director of Appalachian Hardwood Manufacturers Inc., echoed Dorka’s sentiments.
“Mel is, of course, a great guy; the work that he has done is very terrific,” said Inman, who added that Yoder has been a member of the group for a number of years, and that he currently serves on its board of trustees. “Yoder Lumber really does an excellent job. Mel is very intelligent in the way that he goes about business.”
Yoder said that his knack for business comes, at least partially, from the community he is surrounded by.
“A lot of (our success) comes from culture of the area, the background that we have with the Amish employees, and our family background is Amish as well, so it’s what we were taught growing up,” said Yoder, who said that fair business practice is first and foremost what the company aims for.
Yoder said that he is grateful for the recognition and honored that he received it. He said that Yoder Lumber will just keep chugging along as they continue to grow and prosper.
“This gives us national recognition, and a lot of people who have known of us and recognize the name have expressed congratulation to us,” Yoder said. “To me, I think that it just affirms that what we have here is a good thing, that we are a firm company and that we are going to be here for the long haul.”
